pH induced reversible assembly of DNA wrapped carbon nanotubes

چکیده
UNLABELLED BACKGROUND Reversible assembly and disassembly of nanostructures has important function in controllable construction of nanodevices. There are several methods to achieve reversible assembly/disassembly, such as pH, temperature, DNA hybridization and so on. Among these methods, pH driven reversible assembly presents superiority due to its ease-of-use and no waste produced. Herein we report a novel design that use two single-stranded (ss) DNAs wrapped single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) for the pH controlled assembly of SWCNTs without generation of waste. RESULTS Both of the two DNAs with a same wrapping sequence of d(GT)20 and different free terminals showed a very high tendency to wrap around carbon nanotubes. The assembly was driven by the hybridization between the two free terminals of wrapped DNAs on the neighboring SWCNTs: i-motif (four-stranded C-quadruplex) and its complemental stranded G-quadruplex which would form tight tetraplexes and break the hybridization under slightly acidic conditions. Thus the assembly and disassembly are reversibly controlled by pH. And this assembly/disassembly process can be easily distinguished by naked eyes. Gel electrophoresis and Atomic Force Microscope are used to demonstrate the assembly and disassembly of SWCNTs at different pH. CONCLUSIONS A novel pH induced reversible assembly and disassembly of SWCNTs was realized which may have potential applications in the area of controlled assembly of nanostructures.

Controlled formation of carbon nanotube junctions via linker-induced assembly in aqueous solution.
Here we present a simple approach for the controlled formation of one-dimensional and multiterminal nanotube junctions. We describe a facile bottom-up strategy for joining the ends of single-walled carbon nanotubes. The geometry of the junctions can be varied and controlled by linker-induced assembly of DNA-wrapped nanotubes.
متن کاملA novel label-free cocaine assay based on aptamer-wrapped single-walled carbon nanotubes
Objective(s): This paper describes a selective and sensitive biosensor based on the dissolution and aggregation of aptamer wrapped single-walled carbon nanotubes. We report on the direct detection of aptamer–cocaine interactions, namely between a DNA aptamer and cocaine molecules based on near-infrared absorption at λ807. Materials and Methods: First a DNA aptamer recognizing cocaine was non-co...
متن کاملRole of pH controlled DNA secondary structures in the reversible dispersion/precipitation and separation of metallic and semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes.
Single-stranded DNA (ss-DNA) oligomers (dA20, d[(C3TA2)3C3] or dT20) are able to disperse single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in water at pH 7 through non-covalent wrapping on the nanotube surface. At lower pH, an alteration of the DNA secondary structure leads to precipitation of the SWNTs from the dispersion. The structural change of dA20 takes place from the single-stranded to the A-motif...
متن کاملRacemic single-walled carbon nanotubes exhibit circular dichroism when wrapped with DNA.
We have found that racemic mixtures of chiral single-walled nanotubes (SWNTs) wrapped with d(GT)20 DNA oligomer exhibit circular dichroism (CD). We attribute the CD signal to induced CD arising from the coupling of transition moments of the SWNTs and the DNA. Although the nanotube mixture appears to contain both enantiomers in equal amounts, DNA-SWNT transition moment interaction is more constr...
متن کاملVisualizing the local optical response of semiconducting carbon nanotubes to DNA-wrapping.
We studied the local optical response of semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes to wrapping by DNA segments using high resolution tip-enhanced near-field microscopy. Photoluminescence (PL) near-field images of single nanotubes reveal large DNA-wrapping-induced red shifts of the exciton energy that are two times higher than indicated by spatially averaging confocal microscopy. Near-field ...
